Villages & Surroundings
Pitsidia is the heart of this part of south Crete — a quiet, traditional village with about 700 inhabitants that has preserved its authentic Cretan charm. Surrounded by olive groves and orchards, Pitsidia combines calm village life with warm hospitality, fragrant kafenia (cafés), lively tavernas, small shops and a relaxed atmosphere that makes every visit feel personal and memorable. It’s also one of the oldest villages in the region and a great base for exploring nearby beaches, history and nature.
Just a short distance away, a few villages and coastal spots add even more variety to your stay:
Sivas — A traditional, peaceful village about 5 km from the sand beaches, perfect for gentle walks and tasting local life. Narrow streets, tavernas and plenty of shade from ancient olive trees make Sivas a lovely stop on your Cretan journey.
Kalamaki — Quiet and family-friendly, this coastal village lies right by the wide, natural sands of Komo beach. A small promenade with cafés and restaurants enjoys sea views, and the long sandy shore is ideal for relaxed days by the water.
Matala — Just 4 km southwest of Pitsidia, this iconic beach village blends beautiful sandy shores with a rich cultural past. Famous for its dramatic cliff caves and its history as a hippie haven in the 1960s, Matala now offers charming shops, cafés, bars and a lively seaside vibe — yet still retains its relaxed feel.
Together, these villages around Pitsidia give you an authentic taste of southern Crete — from calm village life and traditional hospitality to stunning beaches, fascinating history and plenty of places to explore at your own pace.
